Don't Quote Me Extra Credit

Hi all,

Most of you are aware that I am a big fan of inspirational quotations. I started my collection during my senior year of high school and have continued ever since. The only stipulation for a quote or saying becoming my "quote of the day" is that I must connect with it in some way. It might be humorous, inspirational, or just so darn true. I have obtained quotes from fiction books, song lyrics, by listening to speakers, and from my students.

Here's where I need your help. I want you to help broaden my quote collection. For 5 points of extra credit in the 4th marking period, please do the following:
  • Find a quote that YOU connect with
  • Post the quote and author/speaker (if known) in the form of a comment
  • Also post a brief response as to why the quote is meaningful to you

An example is shown in the first comment. Happy hunting!!

A favorite quote of mine is, "The best things in life aren't things" by Art Buchwald.

Growing up, my dad would always say "it's only money." I love that my parents taught me not to place too much value on material objects. While I love my car and my jeans, I could be happy without them. I can't imagine finding happiness without the feeling of butterflies in my stomach, or looking forward to seeing my best friends who live in different states, or falling asleep on the cold side of the pillow. (Will some of you argue that there is a molecular basis for many of the events that I just described? Yes. Will you be correct? Yes. I still love the quote, though :)

"If I have to apply five turns to the screw each day for the happiness of Argentina, I will do it".-Evita Peron

The reason I chose this quote is because I want my home country to have happiness and stop the violence, robbery, and the government to stop changing the country and make it good instead of bad.

Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come. - Terence Mann field of dreams

This Quote is important to me because it solidifies my belief that baseball, my favorite sport, will always be in the world. It also keeps the child in me alive. When ever I watch Field of dreams and I hear this quote, I get chills.

A quote by Shawn Yang:

You won’t be young a hundred years later. Your car won’t be new twenty years later. Your light bulb won’t shine two months later. Your newspaper won’t give you news two days later. Your soup won’t be hot thirty minutes later. Your clock won’t give you the same time a second later. --- Time can sneak away before you blink your eyes. Rap things up before you still can.

Yes, that's right, i created this quote starting from scratch Sunday when i was eating lunch.

I don't feel like explaining this quote, but basically it's about not wasting your time. The things you do implies your time, the time you spend implies your life. So it is very important to spend your valuable time wisely. I know i don't follow my tips myself. Yet, i think you should. don't yo think so?

I know this is not a quote you will remember, but do you think i care? As long as a made you think for ten seconds and i recieve my five points, then i am good to go...

"It is change, continuing change, inevitable change, that is the dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be."
-Isaac asimov

I love this quote because, besides the fact that it is from one of my favorite authors, it is a true statement about decisions. For example, a lot of times when you make a decision you only take into account the present, not the future and the consequences.

P.S. Ms. Erney, I already had this account, which is why it might not be named appropriately.

"Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted." -David Bly

I identify with this quote because I truly believe that working hard and taking pride in one's work are the only ways to have sucess. It is frustrating when students complain about not getting as good a grade as another student and just because the other student is "smarter". Regardless of an individual's natural intelligence, I do not think that success can be achieved without hard work and determination. I also believe that any lack of natural intelligence can be easily comepnsated for by working hard.

"When the well's dry, we know the worth of water"
- Benjamin Franklin

This quote is important to me because of what's happening in China. Recently, the earthquake and the aftershock has affect many of my friends and family members in China. Many of them emailed me back and told me that they were one of the fast runners who escaped the ten story building. One of my friends told me that she didn't really value her life till she almost lost it. This made me realize that like the water mentioned in the quote, I never really knew the worth of all my friends and family until I almost lost them.

"Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead

While this quote touches on a concept that is difficult to accept, Mead states that it only takes one person to make an opinion known and to obtain a group of supporters. If no one person stood up for what they believed in, then nothing would ever have been or continue to be accomplished.

However, the simplicity of this quote strikes me -- it gives you the raw, simple truth of the situation, and helps in the process of understanding such an important concept.

"happiness is the secret to all beauty. there is no beauty that is attractive without happiness." -christian dior (via facebook)

I love this quote because it's so relevant to everyone (particularly girls). It's so easy to get caught up in the comparisons and competition and the constant search for approval. Too often we forget that even having the cutest nose in the world won't make life better unless something is already radiating from within.Happiness enhances every beauty because it's so infectious- and that's what makes people attractive. Additionally, it's not like our faces are really going to change (I mean, on their own) and they shouldn't. Instead we should just get happy with we've got and realize what a huge impact that makes on how everyone sees us (ourselves included).

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned. -Buddha.

I, being a highly committed buddhist, have learned through years of difficulty managing anger that it is the most wasteful emotion. It is like a parasite, in how it eats away at it's holder. When you are angry in the 21st century, there is nothing practical to do with your anger, because of these things called laws. So, drop the coal because it will do you no good.

-Angels and Airwaves "Rite of Spring"

This quote means alot to me, because first of all, its my favorite Angels and Airwaves song. Secondly, whenever I listen to it, it just makes me realize that whatever is happening in my life, is happening for a reason, and that I should appreciate it--good or bad. It just makes me feel like everything is happening for a reason, and that when I'm older, I'll look back on life, and be thankful that stuff happened then, instead of 20 or 30 years from now.

"It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end."

I took this quote from an interview that Devendra Banhart did. I chose it because of his view of life, he's saying that what matters is being natural, like letting your hair grow and not caring so much about materialistic things. And what is important is music and listening to music and this quote is special to me because he is right in every single way.

"Death is only the Beginning"
-Imohtep

One of the reasons I choose this quote is becaouse it is from one of my favorite movies, The Mommy. The line is said by a priest who believes in an afterlife and reincarnation.

Another reason I choose this quote was because of its connection to my beliefs. I feel that life is one long journey that a person goes on and this journey never stops and this includes death. I think death is the biggest adventure of them all because it is the journey to the unknown and to areas were people can't fathom. Also during your journey through life, nothing will be perfect so your journey could get hard. You shouldn't let things through you off from your ultimate goal.

"I'm pretty sure there's more to life than being really, really ridiculously good looking, and I plan on finding out what that is."
--Derek Zoolander--
This quote is how i base my life. Although some may find me to be really really ridiculously good looking (just kidding), at the end of the day we are all still humans. There has to be more to life than just looks as some of the most successful people in this world are hideous (Hillary Clinton, Michael Jackson, Shaun White)! Personally, ever since i became of the age to speak and understand the things around me, i have been trying to find out what the meaning of life is; and i believe that when you truly understand the meaning of life, then you are ready to go on to heaven.
Another quote that i love is...
"Believe in your flyness, conquer your shyness!"
This quote i also identify with as i used to be very shy, until one day i woke up and realized that no one else in the world can be a better Zach Siegel than myself. So, i conquered my shyness and went about my life more confident about myself.

As an athlete, I can relate to this quote. Without the desire to win or compete what is the point of playing. Yes, it is fun but if you lose it is almost like its worthless. I play on the football and lacrosse teams, neither of which had stellar seasons this year. If we lose this quote always comes to mind and keeps me playing hard. This quote also applies to life in general because you have to try your hardest because the end result is very significant just like a significant.

“Before you Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars – points of light and reason… And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no reason for anything”
-Edward; p514, New Moon

This is one of my favorite quotes from New Moon, the sequel to Twilight. I love it for so many reasons! One: its imagery. When I read this, I can imagine everything Edward is saying; the way your eyes become blinded by bright lights- the way nothing else matters once the most important parts of your life are gone. I also love it because it describes Bella and Edward's relationship perfectly; down to a T.

OH and here's the trailer for the movie, in case anyone wants to watch :D

"But you don't know what you got 'til it's gone
And you don't know what it's like to feel so low
And everytime you smile or laugh you glow
You don't even know, know, know" by Nicholas Jonas (and the Jonas Brothers).

I chose this quote because first of all, I love the Jonas Brothers! Many people don't know that Nick, the youngest member of the band was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes a few years ago. He went through a lot of hard times and had many bad days where nothing was going right. He wrote the song where this quote is from, A Little Bit Longer, about is experience with the disease and how he is not letting it hold him back, it's only going to make him stronger.
I can relate to this quote, but not as personally as Nick can. You should always enjoy what you have or how you're feeling at this moment, because you don't know how long it will last or when it will go away.

"Follow your bliss and doors will open where there were no doors before."
-Joseph Campbell

I heard this quote this past weekend at a conference I went to. There, I met amazing, inspiring people, who all have a strong desire to change the world. Many high school students go through these four years passively, not realizing all of the good actions they could be doing to impact the world. The conference made me realize that we students are not insignificant; we can make a difference too! This quote ays exactly this: if you do what you love to do or 'follow your bliss,' your actions will affect others in ways unimaginable. You will be able to make positive changes to things around you. Follow your bliss constantly, and open all doors..make a difference!

"When I die, will they remember not
What I did, but what I haven't done?
It's not the end, that I fear with each breathe
It's life that scares me to death"

What should truly matter, to yourself, in life is not so much what you have done with it, but what you haven’t. When your time is up, you do not want to have any regrets by missing out on something. People often worry too much about the end, and forget about actually living. This can cause you to miss out on opportunities that you may regret in the end.

I'd like to say that it's pretty cool how my username rhymes. Ok, now that I've said that, one of my favorite quotes is,

"Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile" by
Albert Einstein.

In this confusing stage of adolescence, I find it easy to get caught up in the tiniest of problems that I won't even remember in the longrun. Such as, when I failed a chem test or when I really wanted a pair of hideous shoes. None of it matters. When I am on my death bed, I will remember the memories I had and those I shared them with, who will hopefully be standing around me.

"You are never a loser until you quit trying."

This quote has a fair amount of meaning in my life. Over the 15 years that I have been on this Earth, I have been told many things by my parents, some good, some bad. On thing that has always stuck with me is what my dad has told me since my first day of little league when i was 7. He told me "Son, never quit". Those three words have guided my life since that day and led me to where I am now. Those words have the same meaning to me as this quote by the fmr Chicago Bears Coach. My parents have been sources of inspiration for me for my entire life and for that I can not thank them enough. Without them, I do not know where I would be or who I would be.

Simmons: Hey
Grif: Yeah?
Simmons: Ya ever wonder why we're here?
Grif: It's one of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why ARE we here? I mean are we the product of some cosmic coincidence or is there really a god, watching everything, ya know, with a plan for us and stuff? I don't know man, but it keeps me up at night.
....
Simmons: What? I mean why are we out here in this canyon?
Grif: Oh...uhh...yeah
Simmons: What was all that stuff about god?
Grif: Uhh...hmm? Nothing.
Simmons: Do you wanna talk about it?
Grif: No
Simmons: You sure?
Grif yeah
Simmons: Seriously thought, why are we out here? As far s I can tell, it's just a boxed canyon in the middle of nowhere. No way in or out.
Grif: Mm hmm
Simmons: The only reason that we set up a red base here is because they have a blue base over there, and the only reason that they have a blue base over there is because we have a red base here.
Grif: Yeah, that's because we're fighting each other.
Simmons: No no, I mean, even if we were to pull out today, and they were to come and take our base, they would have two bases in the middle of a boxed canyon. Whoop dee f****** do.
Grif: What's up with that anyway? I mean, I signed on to fight some aliens. Next thing I know, Master Chief blows up the whole covenant armada, and I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere, fighting a bunch of blue guys.

Although this is typically said to a person in mourning, I think this quote can also be motivating. To me, it tells me that the rough times I’m experiencing right now will eventually fade away, bringing bigger and better things. But, it also reminds me that the happiness I am experiencing now will eventually end, giving me more reason to live in the moment and enjoy things while they last.

I picked this quote because I try to live my life this way. Yes it is important to have pride in what you do and to do your best, but if things go wrong theres no point in getting upset about them. For example if you studied a lot for a test and you still did not do as well as you wanted to, instead of getting mad, try harder the next time. I try not to get frustrated by little things because when you look at the big picture they really don't matter. You can't change the past so why get upset about it.

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."

-Winston Churchill

I love this quote because in the past, I have almost perfectly fit into Churchill's definition of a pessimist. I tend to think, "I can't do it," or "I shouldn't do that because it will be too hard." But lately, I've tried to fit his definition of an optimist and one who thrives in difficult situations. So many times in my life, I haven't done something, or have avoided someone, because of fear, when in reality it could have been a really great opportunity for me. But hopefully, I will begin to start looking at my "problems" as opportunities to grow and better myself. And things that I am too scared to do now will be accomplished in the future. In the end, I want to be Churchill's optimist. And with the name Hope, how could I ever be a pessimist?

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than the facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think of say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is that you have a choice every day regarding the attitude you will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable... The only thing that we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... You are in charge of your attitudes." - Charles R. Swindoll

So many times this year I have thought to myself how things happened the way I never would've pictured. To some degree we have control over what happens to us, but as a strong believer of fate I like to think that while we should certainly do our best, there is an alternate predetermined plan for everyone. When I don't get the good grade on a test or win that competition I was so excited about, it never failed to get me down. However, this quotation helps me keep myself sane. It isn't so much the events of my life that shape me, it's how I choose to handle them that does. Just because I don't do well on that test or win that competition doesn't mean I should surrender any hopes I have. It is the optimistic and determined attitude I try to maintain that will get me through any situation. It will even be more helpful than getting that A or coming in first place in any competitive event.

This short, simple quote conveys a message that many of us tend to forget amidst our hectic day to day lives. No matter how bad one's day may be going, one can always rely on this quote to remind oneself what that in the end, you only have one life, and you might as well enjoy it. In reference to this picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/71/PaleBlueDot.jpg

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves."
-Carl Sagan, 1996

I love this quote. To me, it really means a lot, because it removes me from everything around me. It brings me to a spot where I realize anything that's bothering me is plain trivial. It is also a very belittling statement to make about all that humanity, myself included, has, does, or ever will achieve. It is the fact that this quote makes me come to these realizations that makes it so special to me.

I remember having my doubts about whether or not I could even get along with some of them, and I remember being afraid to pursue what I wanted because I was afraid that I wouldn't be accepted. But I went after that dream, and I got to share the ride with an amazing group of people.Everyone always talks about what big dreams and aspirations they have but a dream, no matter how grand, is still just a dream. It's still something that you haven't had the courage to do. I really did live my dream, and now I get to watch the people who made my dream come true, go off be their own dreams.

Ms. Erney, this is the account I had already, so that's why it's not properly named.

Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. -Ferris Bueller

As high school students, most of us are surrounded by lots of work and stress, in school and out of school. We are so busy trying to study and make plans, and we spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking (and stressing) about the future.

We are all so caught up in our busy schedules and hectic lives. And, if you think about it, all this hustle and bustle is mainly to get ready for the future. Many of us are completely preoccupied with preparing for the future and we often forget about living in the present. We forget that now is now and that we have to embrace the present before it slips through our fingers. We should just go out and do it, whatever it is, pushing the consequences and effects aside for just a moment.

I know that it’s foolish to completely forget about the future, but sometimes we should just try to live at this place and in this time. Just... live happily ever after now.

And have fun, because that's what makes our lives worth living.

i like this quote because it says luck and stupidity are just as important as talent in tough situations
